How to pay your self assessment bill

When to pay

The deadlines for paying your tax bill are:

  • 31 January for the tax owed for the previous tax year and your first payment on account
  • 31 July for your second payment on account

So Alan Salt has a tax bill of £100k for the tax year 2019/2020 in his first year of self assessment.  This will be due 31st January 2021 along with a payment on account for the 2020/2021 year.  The second payment on account for 2020/2021 will be due 31st July 2021 and the balancing payment or credit for 2020/2021 is due 31st January 2022.

Ways to pay

The easiest way to pay your tax bill to HMRC is via faster payment, CHAPs or debit/corporate credit card online.  This will be credited same or next day.

Other ways to pay include cheque and direct debit, but these take 3 working days to clear.  New direct debits set up take 5 working days to clear.  Please be aware that if the deadline falls on a weekend or bank holiday then the payment needs to reach HMRC on the previous working day.

As there may be unexpected issues with payment providers, especially at peak times, we would recommend payments are made well in advance of any deadline.
